Guha was one of the four members appointed by the Supreme Court in January this year to implement the Lodha Committee reforms in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Hindustan Times has tried to dissect the reasons that may have led Guha to tender his resignation from the COA. The Supreme Court will hear his plea on July 14 on whether to relive him from his duties.

CoA heading nowhere

The prime reason for Guha quitting from his role. When the CoA was formed, the committee’s head Vinod Rai had said it would take them close to ‘six months’ to implement the reforms. However, the CoA is into its sixth month and they have not had any success as far as bringing the reforms are concerned. The BCCI and the state associations are still at loggerheads over the age criteria, one-state-one-vote, tenure and cooling period between two terms. There have been several meeting held with the state associations but no one has implemented the Supreme Court order yet.

The CoA’s main role was to oversee the implementations of the Lodha reforms. This has taken a backseat as the CoA got sucked into issues which were beyond their mandate. They were involved in issues like the ICC-BCCI tussle over financial and governance model, the players’ remuneration (both domestic and international), the IPL media rights and tender processes and the latest being the reported ‘rift’ between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli. All these issues have diverted the CoA’s main task.
