The league has caught the attention of world cricket fraternity for it marks the return of banned Australia cricketer Steve Smith to competitive cricket. Smith, who was handed over a 12-month ban following his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, has been named a marquee player.

The list of marque players also include destructive West Indian opener Chris Gayle, former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, Sri Lanka pace veteran Lasith Malinga, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine among others.

As per reports, former Pakistan pacer Younis will coach the Winnipeg Eagles while former Australian all-rounder Moody, who coached Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded IPL, will be in control of the Montreal Tigers. Former West Indies coach Phil Simmons will be mentoring the Toronto Nationals.

The five coaches will take part in players’ draft that is scheduled to take place on Sunday. Each team can rope in two of the 10 marquee stars and 14 other players from a talent pool of 1,500 players from across the world. Four roster spots will be kept for Canadians, including one for a Canadian U-23 player.

The league will feature six teams with a Cricket West Indies representative team joining the five Canadian outfits.

As many as 22 matches will be played during the league with the final slated to be held on July 16.

“I look forward to this experience. I have fond memories of playing in Toronto in the 1990s,” Younis was quoted as saying by the cricket.com.au.

“I still remember the kind of excitement it created at that time and this time it should be no different,” he added.
