India’s domestic season for 2026/27 is officially set to get underway with the 63rd edition of the Duleep Trophy, with the focus firmly on the country’s next batch of Test hopefuls. With injuries increasingly affecting the Indian team, a strong performance over the next fortnight could potentially earn one of these players a place in the senior squad, especially with a long season ahead, including the tour of New Zealand in November followed by the five-Test Border-Gavaskar series at home.

While the Duleep Trophy has traditionally been a star-studded affair, featuring the cream of India’s first-class cricketers, much of the attention this year will be on one player — Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. After setting the T20 format alight in IPL 2026, which paved the way for his India debut last month, Sooryavanshi went on to win the Player of the Series award during India’s tour of Zimbabwe. He is now ready for the red-ball challenge and has also been named vice-captain of the East Zone side.
This will not be Sooryavanshi’s first taste of red-ball cricket in India’s domestic setup. He has already played eight first-class matches for Bihar and even served as the team’s vice-captain last season. His appearances were limited by India U-19 commitments, but he did produce a standout performance against Meghalaya, smashing a 67-ball 93.
