The editor of a Hindi news channel has been booked for allegedly raping a woman who claimed to be his colleague.
The Delhi Police, which registered a case against the editor on Friday, said the complainant had alleged that he raped her several times since June last year after hiring her at a senior position in the channel and promising to marry her.
The woman also accused the editor of allegedly threatening her with dire consequences if she filed the police complaint or told anybody about the crime, said police on Saturday.
Additional commissioner of police (New Delhi) BK Singh said that a case of rape and criminal intimidation was registered on Friday on the woman’s complaint, which she filed at the Tughlaq Road Police Station on Tuesday. “The statement of the woman was recorded on Saturday. We are probing the case,” said Singh.
When contacted, the editor of the news channel refuted the woman’s allegations, saying the woman was not working in his company and he had never offered her any job. “The allegations of rape against me are false and baseless. Police is probing the case. The truth will prevail,” he said.
The woman in her complaint, a police officer associated with the case said, told them that she came in contact with the news channel’s editor while she was working in a gym in 2016. The two reportedly became friends and the editor allegedly offered her a senior position in the news channel.
“In April 2017, the woman joined the company. She has alleged that on June 9, her employer called her at his residence and raped her after promising to marry her. Thereafter, he repeated the crime several times,” said the officer, quoting the woman’s complaint.
According to the police, the editor called the woman in a hotel in central Delhi on August 26 last year and sexually assaulted her and promised that he will marry her soon. A few days later, the woman learnt that the editor was already married and had two children. When she confronted him, a quarrel broke out between the two, said police.
“The editor helped the woman financially to prevent her from filing a case against him. She has alleged that he also threatened her. To prove her claims, the woman has provided us with WhatsApp conversation between her and the editor,” the officer said.
ACP Singh said that the hotel authorities have confirmed the presence of the editor in the hotel as the room was booked in his name.
