Sanjay Rathore, a constable of Indore police, does not believe in driving away slum children playing near Chhatripura police station. He educates them and provides job opportunities, free-of-cost.
The 42-year-old constable studied at the School of Law of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidhyalaya (DAVV) and has been teaching since Indore police started a drive to educate slum children at every police station in 2003 with support from an NGO. The rest of the centres downed shutters in 2006 as the NGO stopped providing funds.
However, the coaching centre at Chhatripura police station, called Sanjeevni Bal Mitra Kendra, has been running with 1200 students and about a 100 tutors, who have been past students of Rathore. The constable invests his money into running the centre. He teaches children, helps them get admission at government schools and finally, offers them posts of tutors at the institution to help them earn a living.
“I teach them subjects such as moral science, general knowledge, yoga and computer basics. After a year-long course, the organisation provides certificates to students, with which they get jobs,” Rathore said.
Navin Limbodiya, who learned operations of photo editing software from Rathore’s centre and now works at Atal Indore City Transport Services Limited (AICTSL), said, “I was born in a slum and had never thought of achieving this much in my life. Rathore sir helped me in education. Now, I work in a reputed company,” said Limbodiya, while talking to Hindustan Times.
