Great demand for food technologists in modern industrial world

Virginia Wolf has rightly said, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” No matter how dynamics change in the market, food is a constant in every living organism’s life. With each passing day, consumers demand more from the food on their table. This is where the skills of a food technologist comes in; he/she facilitates development and management of food production.

Food technology is the application of food science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution, and use of safe, nutritious and wholesome food. In today’s date, a number of colleges provide a course in Food Technology. Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences, Delhi University, Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women, DU, University of Mumbai, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore and National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management are a few to name.

The job can vary depending on the type of employer and area of work, eg manufacturing, retail or public sector, and area of specialism.Food technologists may find employment in food processing, retail, hotel and the agro-products sector, to name some options.

“After completing Class 12, one can opt for Honours in bachelor of science in food technology. After that, they can go for higher studies like masters of science in food technology at institutes like the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, or opt for MBA (agro-business management)” says Dr. Meenakshi Garg, assistant professor in Department of Food Technology in Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences, University of Delhi. “Technologists modify foods to create products such as fat-free items and ready meals. They continuously research and innovate ways of packaging and food technology. The job of a food technologist is a challenging and evolving one,” she informed.
