At present, the discipline of Urdu is housed in the IGNOU School of Humanities (SOH). Shortly, the studies of Urdu language will be inducted in the school. The certificate programme is indicative of these plans and is seen as a major initiative to promote literacy in Urdu among Urdu and Hindi speakers.

SOH is thinking of launching in the near future a number of advanced programmes from certificate level, namely, Diploma, BA Elective, Major, MPhil and PhD by 2011. Recently MPhil / PhD programmes have also been approved by the academic council of the university.

The programme is seen as a good option for mediapersons, legal practitioners, bureaucrats, diplomats for their professional needs.

Researchers working on medieval India, freedom struggle and allied fields will be facilitated by the programme for their research as knowledge of the language will ensure them direct access to Urdu texts where required. IGNOU also has a special slot for Urduprogramme on its Gyan Darshan Channel.
