New Delhi Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) have emerged as India’s strongest providers of highly employable graduates and the University of Delhi as the leading provider of highly successful alumni, according to the latest QS Graduate Employability Rankings.
QS Quacquarelli Symonds announced the world’s 500 leading universities for the nurturing of graduate employability on Monday. Eight Indian institutions have been listed in the top 100 in the ranking launched in 2015 to look beyond traditional measures such as research strength and academic reputation. (See table).
IIT-D and IIT-B rank in the 191-200 categories globally according to the ranking by the global higher education analysts. Also ranked in the 201-250 category are the University of Mumbai and Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M).
The University of Delhi (201st-250th overall) received one of the highest scores in the world for QS’s Alumni Outcomes indicator that measures how successful a university is in producing high-achieving graduates. It scores 96.6/100, the 21st-highest score worldwide.

“Better comparative data about how universities are preparing their students for the 21st-century economy is required. This ranking is designed to improve the conversation we are having about this important component of a university’s mission, and allow students to make informed global comparisons,” QS research director Ben Sowter said.
Sowter added these results indicate that universities cannot rely on reputation alone.
“They also need to ensure that they are committed to innovative teaching methods, proactively forge relationships with businesses, and provide numerous opportunities for students to meet potential future employers.”
Globally, Stanford University emerged as the world leader, followed by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Harvard University as third.
he United States is home to five of the world’s top 10 universities for student employability – and all five are based in either California or Boston, Massachusetts.
The rankings are calculated on five metrics – employer reputation, alumni outcomes, partnerships with employers, employer-student connections, and graduate employment rate.
