The Joint Admission Board on Thursday released the extended list or the supplementary merit list of candidates eligible for getting admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology.
Earlier in the day, the board announced that the extended list of qualified students now stands at 31,980 from the existing 18,138. With this more students have become eligible for getting admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology. This has been done on the directions of the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry as they directed IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) to issue a supplementary merit list for JEE Advanced 2018.

Choice filling on Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) would start on June 15. Students in the extended merit list can start filing up their options along with others.
The fresh list has twice the number of students in each discipline to ensure there are no vacancies, as first reported by Hindustan Times. The list also applies to general category students if there are vacancies in a discipline.

{{/usCountry}}“It is the policy of government of India that all reservation category seats in all disciplines are filled and no vacant seats are left after counselling for admission in IITs,” said a letter issued by the ministry.
Directions were issued on June 13 in this regard. The list has to be released before students who passed JEE Advanced 2018 start selecting disciplines.
As per IIT data, out of the 1,55,158 students who took JEE in 2018, only 18,138 students qualified.
According to officials, the issue was taken up in an emergency meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) held on Wednesday as many directors had raised apprehensions that seats may go vacant. “ A final decision has been taken without compromising the merit,” said a senior official. This year, the result of the JEE Advanced 2018 witnessed a fall in the number of candidates who qualified. Students who clear JEE Advanced are eligible for admission in any one of the 23 IITs in the country. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will announce the first seat allotment on June 27.
Of the 10,998 seats that were offered in the 23 IITs in 2017, the number of vacancies after seven rounds of counselling stood at 121, which was more than the 96 vacancies in 2016. In 2015, there were 50 vacant seats and in 2014, three.
