According to Gurudas Kamat, minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, the heroines were chosen based on their subtle acting abilities, which helped their films achieve a cult status, apart from winning them several awards.

Drawing attention to the reach of the country’s movie stars and directors, Kamat also mentioned that India Post had previously honoured
cinematic luminaries like directors Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt and actor Nargis Dutt.

He added that they had significant influence on the psyche of Indian people and remain in their memories till today.

The stamps were released in the presence of yesteryear actors Vyjayantimala Bali and Asha Parekh.
