Nandita Puri, the wife of actor Om Puri who has been charged with domestic violence, has alleged that her husband harassed her in front of their son. “Om first verbally abused me and then began to hit me. My son (Ishaan), who was with his tuition teacher (at that time), came out and intervened. Seeing them, Om left, not before telling me, ‘I’m a celeb. Do what you want to do. No one will touch me.’ At 10:30 pm, I went to the police station (in Mumbai) to file an FIR,” she tells us.

A Mumbai police official confirmed the development, saying, “Om Puri has been accused of domestic violence. A complaint was filed by his wife on the August 23. There have been no developments since then. The actor is not in custody yet.”

While we could not reach the 62-year-old actor to verify his wife’s claims, he told a news website, “She is a compulsive liar. I have never been involved in any kind of violence. Earlier, she accused me of trying to kidnap her son. Her allegation proved to be a lie.” Nandita, on her part, says that Om is planning a quick exit from the legal mulch. “Earlier, Om told me that he will take off for a shoot for three months, after which he will head to Canada for another six to eight months, and I would be left helpless with no money ... I gave a letter to the cops to send to the immigration department so that he does not leave. But frankly, I believe they’re waiting for him to go. At the end of the day, he’s a celebrity with some power. And being a celeb, he will have his way and, in the process, an ordinary citizen will suffer.”

And across the shore...Celebrity TV chef Nigella Lawson was also in news recently for being a victim of domestic violence. In June, a newspaper published photographs showing her then husband, art tycoon Charles Saatchi, holding her by the throat as they had an argument on the terrace of a London restaurant. Saatchi dismissed the incident as nothing more than “a playful tiff” but later, 53-year-old Lawson ended her 10-year marriage to Saatchi, 70, on the grounds of his unreasonable behaviour.
