Stars made style statements in twos on the red carpet on Day 8 of Cannes Film Festival.fashion and trends Updated: May 25, 2013 19:43 IST
Indian connect: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Mallika Sherawat
From her pageant queen hairdo to the gold overkill, there isn’t much to like about Aishwarya’s look. A muted blouse, smaller earrings and more casual hair would’ve balanced out this look a lot better. But if Ash had too much going on, Mallika had too little. Her Dolce & Gabbana gown looks ill-fitted, we suspect that’s because it’s designed for someone with a longer torso. She didn’t even make an effort to add jewellery or make-up that would enhance the look.
Best dressed: Nicole Kidman, Stacy Keibler
Apparently, this Valentino gown was the one Anne Hathway shunned last minute for a rather hideous pink one. What a huge mistake that was, for the Australian actor looked divine in it. Her hairdo is understated, as are the accompanying jewels. Stacy Keibler also kept her look fuss-free to let her aubergine Zac Posen gown stand out, and it’s a move we appreciate. They were the best dressed of the night for us.
The Elie Saab club: Irina Shayk, Petra Nemcova
What’s a red carpet without some shimmery creations by the Lebanese designer? These are both looks we’ve seen several times over, but it’s hard to deny that Irina, who has never looked this coy, and Petra, whose unique styling makes this look better, were having a great night.
Sticking to formula: Dita Von Teese, Heidi Klum
After repeating one of Sonam Kapoor’s dresses at the festival, Dita was at it again, wearing the same Ulyana Sergeenko dress that Natalia Vodianova wore in red, and Fan Bingbing and Zhang Yuqi have worn as floor-length gowns. Heidi on the other hand rocked a one-shouldered, corseted Versace gown with a thigh-high split, but it’s all too familiar. Time for an intervention, maybe?
Serpentine: Karolina Kurkova, Sharon Stone
We’re mildly obsessed with the sexy Roberto Cavalli cut-out gown on Karolina, but that studded serpentine bracelet is creating a statement of its own. But trust Sharon to take the theme further with a gold snake on the back of her white gown, also by Cavalli. We prefer it to the other outfits she’s worn at the festival so far, but for us, Karolina wins this round.
