Snapchat filter-inspired beauty looks to wilderness portrayed in the form of makeup, here’s how global runways are turning up innovation a notch higher.

When Spanish label Desigual took inspiration from Snapchat lenses for their show at the New York Fashion Week (NYFW), social media went into a tizzy. From the popular butterfly tiara to the puppy face, the beauty look paid an ode to the popular filters.

“I think inspiration can be derived from absolutely anywhere, so I am sure when MAC’s senior vice president Gordon Espinet designed all the looks, he was inspired by the fun filters that snapchat offers. Also, social media is at its peak popularity and it was a very clever idea he hit on,” says beauty expert Natasha Nischol, who designed makeup inspired by newsprint, pop culture and more during the recent fashion week in Mumbai.

The butterfly gold tiara, a popular Snapchat filter, also made its way on Desigual’s ramp.

“India has been getting more fashion forward as the years progress and its just going to keep getting better. In fact, we had designed a very specific makeup look for Sanjay Garg of Raw Mango. His collection was called monkey business, and he wanted to translate this on the face by making the models actually look like monkeys. Since it’s fashion,we had to keep it more fashion forward as opposed to it being caricature or theatrical. It worked really well and it was great to have a big name in the fashion industry thinking outside the box and wiling to do something fun and different. So yes, the trend is definitely happening and I’m hoping that we see a lot more designers that are up for it,” Nischol added.

Here are looks from (clockwise from top) Anita Dongre’s look at India Couture Week and, from the Mumbai ramp, Raw Mango by Sanjay Garg, Chola and Chirag Nainani, and Suhani Pittie.

Another veteran in this realm, Ambika Pillai, says that drama is perfect for couture. “Over the years, make up on the ramp for fashion weeks has actually gone more minimalistic for prêt shows and for couture weeks, a little more dramatic. Nevertheless, there are designers in both weeks that sometimes do experiment . Also, when it come to social network inspiration, Snapchat trends are fun, though Instagram is more useful,” she says.
