Anju Modi took everyone on a walk through history through her collection, A Maiden’s Prayer, which was inspired from the Victorian era, on the first day of the Hindustan Times and Sunil Sethi Design Alliance’s India Couture Week 2018. Modi, who’s showstopper was Kangana Ranaut, spoke to us about her collection, and also debunked some myths about models and designers.
When asked what were the biggest myths about models and designers, Modi said, “People think that models have no brains but that is not true! It shows in the way they handle their garments and their composure during the fashion show, all this requires some intelligence. Secondly, people think that designers are all glamour hungry but the truth is that we are very hard working. In fact, we are like labourers!”
Modi has always drawn inspiration from history and architecture throughout her career, and the menswear collection took a page from Victorian era with metallic stripes on long-sleeves and embellished brooches. The flowy kurtas in jewel tones paired with straight pants stood out.
Talking about her collection, she said, “My designs were inspired from the Victorian era, but the fabrics were all Indian and all the artisans were also Indian.”
