Fashion experts say it’s a bit much in the name of pushing fashion boundaries.

Thigh-high slits that ride up dangerously, all-sheer fabrics that leave little to the imagination, cut-outs that bare all and high-end designs that are more daring than demure — risqué fashion is making a big comeback.

Recently, at the ongoing Venice Film Festival, Italian models Giulia Salemi and Dayane Mello chose to go for red-carpet attire which featured hip-high slits. Salemi even chose to go commando. As the gust of wind hit the dresses, the paparazzi went into a quite a click-frenzy.

At the MTV VMAs , which also took place recently, snug-fit dresses and navel-deep necklines also made news.

But, is the trend to go risqué an attention-seeking move, or is it actually, the new order in fashion? Indian designers are bashing it and they think it’s a tad too much.

Designer Nida Mahmood thinks that this is all a publicity stunt. “As far as making a statement is concerned, it is quite a statement. Perhaps the world is trying to say they are comfortable with their bodies and they are confident carrying off a bold look without qualms. But personally I feel it’s quite unnecessary. A bold statement can be made in many other ways. I would say this could very well be a desperate cry for attention. Such high slits are not aesthetically or visually pleasing,” she says.

Model Giulia Salemi left little to the imagination as she walked down the red carpet at Venice Film Festival.
