Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch will voice the Grinch in Illumination Entertainment’s new retelling of Dr. Seuss children’s book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The 39-year-old actor will voice the titular character, which was famously portrayed by Jim Carrey in the 2000 live-action adaptation, reported Ace Showbiz.

Illumination chairman Chris Meledandri, who will also produce the new Grinch movie, said that Cumberbatch had a voice that exudes “comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability.”
The actor previously lent his voice to both Smaug the Dragon and the Necromancer in The Hobbit movies. Grinch is set for release on November 10, 2017.
The actor is also making his feature production debut with a film about Guantanamo Bay. Cumberbatch has signed on to develop a film about suspected terrorist Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who has been imprisoned at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba without ever being charged with a crime or being able to defend himself in court.
Guantanamo Diary, based on Slahi’s memoirs, will be produced through Cumberbatch and Adam Ackland’s company SunnyMarch. It will detail allegations Slahi made about being subjected to enhanced interrogation techniques and torture. Cumberbatch’s first production project was 2013 short film, Little Favour.
