Fifty Shades of Grey is polarising. Being indifferent towards the series isn’t easy, especially once you’ve seen it. You either love it or hate it. And now, after the first trailer for Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to the worldwide blockbuster is out, the debate is only going to get louder.

If only to fuel that hot, hot fire, we decided to pit Dakota Johnson, who plays the willingly abused Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades movies, against some of the most iconic heroines of classic erotic thrillers.

You’ll notice that if you were born in the ’80s, you could probably make the case that it was the best time to be alive ever. That being said, the Fifty Shades series has rekindled the modern audience’s romance with erotic thrillers - even if most of them, like Christian Grey, don’t treat them too well.

Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct, 1992)

A violent, suspended police detective (Michael Douglas) investigates a brutal murder, in which a manipulative and seductive woman could be involved.

Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction, 1987)

A married man’s (we meet again, Michael Douglas) one-night stand comes back to haunt him when that lover begins to stalk him and his family.

Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary, 2002)

A young woman, recently released from a mental hospital, gets a job as a secretary to a demanding lawyer, where their employer-employee relationship turns into a sexual, sadomasochistic one.

Kathleen Turner (Body Heat, 1981)

In the midst of a searing Florida heat wave, a woman convinces her lover, a small-town lawyer, to murder her rich husband.

Nicole Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut, 1999)

A New York City doctor, who is married to an art curator, pushes himself on a harrowing and dangerous night-long odyssey of sexual and moral discovery after his wife admits that she once almost cheated on him.

Melanie Griffith (Body Double, 1984)

A young actor’s obsession with spying on a beautiful woman (Twist! She’s played by Dakota Johnson’s mother - Melanie Griffith!) who lives nearby leads to a baffling series of events with drastic consequences.
