Twenty-three-year-old Emma Stone, last seen in The Help, will now play Peter Parker’s first love interest, Gwen Stacy, in The Amazing Spiderman which releases on July 3.
Emma admits she didn’t grow up reading comics, so she gathered all her information about Spiderman by watching older movies based on the character. Though The Amazing Spiderman was shot in 3D and was a very big scale movie, the actor wasn’t daunted. “You’re human beings trying to tell other human beings a story that resonates. That matters most.” she says.
While she was shooting for The Help, the producers of The Amazing Spiderman sent her a couple of scenes of the movie. Emma recalls, “I was down with severe bronchitis when I auditioned with Andrew (Garfield).” The news that she had been finalised for the role was broken to her when she was working with Bryce Dallas Howard, the actor who played Gwen Stacy before being replaced by Emma, on The Help.
She says, “When Marc Webb told me that I had bagged the role, Bryce came running, yelling ‘you’re the new Gwen Stacy!’” Gwen was Peter Parker’s high school sweetheart. “She is a fiercely intelligent science student whose unusual relationship with Peter and Spiderman blossoms into an intense love affair,” says Emma, adding, “Like most girls, her father has always been the love of her life. He’s a police chief, very protective of her and thinks she is highly responsible.”
But then Gwen breaks her own rule by getting involved with Peter. She says, “She knows that Peter is dangerous and she probably has some kind of complex about danger because of her father’s job.” Gwen’s relationship with Peter helps her stand up to her father. “Peter helps her change someone’s else plan for her life,” explains Emma.
