Imran Khan, whose official name is Imran Khan Pal, an American citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, was detained by Mumbai Police on October 10 and released later. He had participated in a protest.

The FRRO notice, a copy of which is with Hindustan Times, alleges that Khan violated provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, and directs him to leave India on or before October 28.

Deep Dive

Why is Imran Khan challenging the FRRO notice in the Bombay High Court?

His lawyers say he did not violate applicable conditions and that the notice does not clearly identify the provisions he allegedly breached. They are seeking an urgent hearing to challenge the direction to leave India.

Can an OCI cardholder take part in a protest in India?

The Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, and its rules do not explicitly prohibit foreign nationals from participating in protests or political activity. Khan’s lawyers argue that no applicable condition barred his participation.

What could happen if Imran Khan does not leave India by the deadline?

The notice warns that non-compliance could make him liable for prosecution under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. The Act also provides for the removal of a foreigner in specified circumstances.
