Both the woman and the man are Dalits and police have registered a case of rape against the 22-year-old accused identified as Manoj who is still at large.

“We have registered a case on complaint of girl’s family and raids were being conducted to arrest the accused,” said Ajay Kumar, circle officer of Hasanpur. The foetus has been sent to a forensic lab for examination, he said.

The victim who went to the Hasanpur Kotwali with her mother, told the police that the accused had raped her at gunpoint five months ago and had threatened her of dire consequences if she told about it to anyone else.

The woman kept quiet out of fear before the situation worsened when she got pregnant. She alleged that the accused then gave her some medicine for abortion on July 13. Her condition deteriorated after she took those medicines. Family members came to know about the entire incident on Friday after she had aborted.

In a similar incident, a 14-year-old rape victim of Lisari Gate area had reached the office of the senior superintendent of police in Meerut on May 19 carrying her aborted foetus in a bag. She accused two young men of her neighbourhood – Adil and Hasan - of outraging her modesty when she was alone at home. They also provided her medicines for abortions and tried to settle the case by offering money to the victim’s family. But they refused to compromise and reported the incident to police.
