Ruining saris of guests at a wedding reception by some mischievous friends, proved costly for a well-educated, Pune-based groom, when the Gujarat-born girl he was to marry, called it quits on Wednesday.
What infuriated the bride and her family was the rustic behaviour of the groom’s friends, as they mischievously threw food at each other during the wedding reception. In playing pranks, they not only hurt the sentiments of some guests, but also spoilt their saris.
The bride, a fashion designer in Gujarat, did not bat an eyelid before dumping Subhash Sharma, a computer engineer, who also holds an MBA degree.
Citing ‘incompatibility’, she walked out of the wedding mandap after the jaimaal (exchange of garlands between the bride and the groom in a Hindu marriage) at a remote Manjhiyawan village under Darihat police station of Bihar’s Rohtas district, 150 km south-west of Patna.
The baraat (groom’s wedding party), which had come from Lalapur village in the same district, had to return without the bride.
The bride’s father, a businessman who shifted base to Gujarat in 1984, told HT over phone that the groom, his family and friends were crass. “They misbehaved even with our guests. I have called the boy today to hear his side and see if there is still a possibility of reconciliation.”

{{/usCountry}}Quoting family members of the bride, Darihat station house officer (SHO) Siyaram Singh said, “The bride was incensed by the rustic behaviour of the groom’s friends and family. When the girl complained to the groom about his friends, he reportedly said he could leave her but not his friends. That was enough for the bride to snap the marriage.”
He, however, said that no complaint had been lodged with the police.
