The IMD said on Tuesday that Yaas will cause heavy rains in Odisha and West Bengal with wind speeds of 185 kilometres per hour. Nearly 900,000 people in West Bengal have been evacuated and shifted to relief camps so far, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said adding 370,000 people have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.
Odisha has so far evacuated over 200,000 people from vulnerable regions. The state government has issued a red alert for Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur and Balasore districts- which will be severely hit by the cyclonic storm.

Heavy rains are also expected in Bihar and Jharkhand. Authorities have issued an orange colour for Bihar. A red alert has been issued for Jharkhand with IMD adding extreme rainfall is expected in the southern and central parts of the state.

The IMD said on Tuesday evening that Yaas has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm. "The severe cyclonic storm 'Yaas over northwest and Bay of Bengal intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm," IMD director general M Mohapatra told news agency PTI and added it will move north-northwestwards, intensify further reach near north Odisha coast close to Dhamra port by Wednesday morning.

The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata will suspend all flight operations on May 26 from 8.30 am to 7.45 pm in view of cyclone Yaas.
"In view of the weather warning by @Indiametdept over #CycloneYaas, flight operations at #KolkataAirport will be suspended from 0830 IST upto 1945 IST on 26.05.2021.We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused," the airport authorities tweeted.
