A groom died after suffering a massive heart attack, minutes before his wedding in Bihar’s Kaimur district, while in a separate incident, a groom’s cousin was killed in celebratory firing in Rohtas, Friday.
Shashikant Pandey,25, collapsed soon after he put on his dancing shoes and broke into a jig with his friends, who had pulled him out of his bedecked car to join them in the celebratory dance.
The tragedy happened just as the baraat (marriage party) was cantering to the marriage venue for jaimaal (exchange of garlands between bride and groom) after dwarpuja (a Hindu marriage ritual to welcome the groom).
Shashikant’s friends and relatives rushed him to a nearby health facility at Mohania, where doctors declared him brought dead. Doctors said the groom had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Shashikant, son of Daya Shankar Pandey, of Saranpur village, used to help his father at the latter’s public distribution shop after completing bachelors of education course. He had travelled a distance of 2 kms to nearby Chaubepur village, 50 kms north of the district headquarters Bhabua, for his wedding on Friday. A pall of gloom enveloped the two families.
In another incident, a groom’s cousin, Jitendra Singh, 33, was killed in celebratory firing at Gonaila Tola village under Karagahar police station in Rohtas, 150 kms south-west of Patna. Singh was opposed to the celebratory firing by three men, who had joined the ‘baraat’ reportedly in an inebriated condition.

{{/usCountry}}The ‘baraat’ was enjoying the dance by women dancers when three drunken youths, waving rifles and country made pistols in their hands, joined the dancers on stage and began firing in the air. Singh walked up to the stage and objected to their action, forcing them to come down from the stage. Ticked off by Singh’s resistance, the deviant youths began firing at the stage. One bullet hit Singh and he dropped dead.
The villagers chased down the youths, who tried to escape, and apprehended two while the third managed to escape. The villagers thrashed the two youths — Umesh Singh and Lallan Singh — before handing them to the police.
Police said medical tests proved the youths had consumed alcohol, which in banned in Bihar.
This is the fifth such incident in the district this year. Two young female dancers — Naina Kumari and Chandani Kumari — were shot dead in separate incidents on January 30 and April 5, respectively. On May 8, two boys in their teens were critically injured at Dhanpurwa village, while another youth was injured in celebratory firing at Amartalab village of the district in the last week of April.
