Cyclone Fani likely to intensify into severe cyclonic storm in next 12 hours

Cyclone Fani, which has been strengthening in south-east Bay of Bengal, is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours.

Cyclone Fani is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours, the Met department said on Sunday.

Cyclone Fani is very likely to reach near the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by the evening of April 30.

“Cyclonic Storm ‘Fani’ is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards till 1st May and thereafter recurve northeastwards gradually,” India Meteorological Department (IMD) statement said.

The cyclonic storm is very likely to reach near the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by the evening of April 30. Cyclone Fani currently lays over east Equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal.

If the cyclone makes landfall, it will be the second one in the state within six months. Cyclone Gaja hit the state in November. In the cyclonic devastation, 63 people died and thousands of houses were damaged in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Pudukkottai districts.
