  GST news LIVE updates: Prices of about 375 items ranging from kitchen staples to electronics, medicines equipment as well as automobiles get cheaper from today, September 22, as the reduced GST rates take effect.

  In a big bonanza to the consumers, the GST Council, comprising Centre and states, announced on September 4 reducing GST on most goods and services at 5 per cent or 18 per cent discontinuing the earlier slabs of 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent, and 28 per cent.

  Under the new GST reforms, ultra-luxury items or “sin” goods will face 40 per cent tax. Tobacco and related products will remain in the 28 per cent bracket, along with an additional cess.

  The government decided roll out the new GST rates from September 22 – the first day of the Navaratri festival.

  Mass consumption items like ghee, paneer, butter, 'namkeen', ketchup, jam, dry fruits, coffee and ice creams, and aspirational goods like TV, AC, washing machines will now be cheaper.
