A gunfight broke out between two insurgent groups at Kharam in the ethnic violence-hit Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Thursday. Officials said a Kuki underground outfit was involved in the gunfight with the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF).

In a statement, ZUF’s S Kasom said the gun battle began at around 7:40am, and at least two or three Kukis may have been seriously injured. It added that all members of ZUF’s armed wing, Zeliangrong Tiger Force, returned safely to their base.
The statement said concerns over the submission of a topographical map to support a demand for “Separate Administration”, alleged illicit poppy cultivation, and the establishment of unauthorised camps under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) framework, and other unlawful activities triggered the gun battle.
The outfit clarified that it does not oppose the legitimate aspiration of the Kuki people within their recognised native land. It added that it firmly asserts that no Kuki land exists within their ancestral territory.
The ZUF reaffirmed its commitment to protect its people, property, and land. It cautioned that any form of encroachment will not be tolerated. “Those occupying the said areas unlawfully are urged to pack their belongings and desert immediately to avoid further escalation.”
