An unidentified man stole a motorcycle from a showroom in Varanasi’s Manduadih area on Monday night, but it was his unusual behaviour inside the dealership that has drawn attention.

CCTV footage from inside the shop showed the man dancing, drinking coffee, taking a bath and even changing clothes before riding away with a KTM Adventure 390 S bike, police said.

The incident came to light in the early hours of Tuesday after showroom manager Rohit Kumar Singh received a call from the security guard saying the dealership’s main door had been damaged. Upon rushing to the store, Singh found that a section of the gate had been cut from the bottom, while another part had been broken. Glass shards were scattered inside and outside the premises.

Singh then checked the motorcycles kept inside and found that his bike, which he had parked at the showroom before leaving for home, was missing. A branded T-shirt and cap, along with a vehicle cover, were also found missing from the accessories stock. He subsequently informed the police.

Thief danced, made coffee before fleeing

The CCTV footage showed the suspect arriving outside the dealership around 11:30 pm wearing a white shirt and jeans and carrying a picture of a goddess, Singh said.

He added that the man first pushed against the door and looked inside before taking out a cutter and starting to cut through the glass.

When heavy rain began, the man moved to the rear of the showroom. He tore down a banner, wrapped it around himself for cover and sat there for some time before returning to the door and continuing to cut it.

The man finally entered the showroom around 12:06 am. Once inside, he switched on the computer at the reception and sat in the chair, spinning around for a while. He then walked around the showroom, examining several motorcycles.

The CCTV footage also showed him helping himself to water from a mini-fridge before making coffee using the coffee machine.

His behaviour became even more unusual as he spent time inside the showroom. He took a bath in the washroom, spread his clothes over a motorcycle and tore a bike cover to make a lungi-like garment. He then danced to music, jumping and moving vigorously around the showroom.

The man later took a showroom T-shirt and cap before making his final move. He selected the KTM Adventure 390 S and rode out of the dealership.

Police launch hunt

Manduadih station house officer (SHO) Ajay Verma said an FIR had been registered on the basis of the showroom manager’s complaint.

"Information was received about the theft of a bike. We inspected the scene, and the forensic team collected evidence. A team has been deployed to ensure arrest of the accused," Verma said.

Police said teams were working to identify and trace the suspect and that the accused would be arrested soon.
