Public Broadcaster Prasar Bharati’s chief executive officer Jawahar Sircar has decided to resign five months before his term ends saying his plans to clean up Doordarshan were “spiked repeatedly”.

“I have not decided the exact date (to resign), though I have made up my mind,” he told Hindustan Times. “Done my best in India’s toughest and thankless broadcasting task but I am tired now.”

The former culture secretary appointed by the UPA government had repeatedly accused the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of not allowing him to run Doordarshan and All India Radio in an autonomous manner and accused the government of interference.

Sircar has reportedly informed the Information and Broadcasting Ministry about his desire to quit but wants to complete his unfinished job on making processes transparent before he actually puts in his papers. Appointed in 2012, his tenure ends in next February.

Former I&B secretary Sunil Arora who was recently appointed as advisor in Prasar Bharati is expected to succeed him.
