The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Jordan and Maldives became the latest nations to condemn controversial remarks made by now-removed leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Prophet Mohammad.
The statements that have sparked a major diplomatic fallout were made by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and its Delhi media chief Naveen Jindal, both of whom were removed from the party a day ago. In a statement, the UAE's foreign ministry expressed “its denunciation and rejection of insults of the Prophet Muhammad”. It affirmed the UAE's firm rejection of all practices and behaviours that “contradict moral and human values and principles”. The ministry spoke about the need to respect religious symbols and not violate them, as well as confront hate speech and violence. It also noted the importance of strengthening the shared international responsibility to spread the values of tolerance and human coexistence while preventing any practices that would inflame the sentiment of followers of different religions.
The government of Maldives said it is deeply concerned by the derogatory remarks made by the some officials of the BJP insulting the Prophet and Islam. It also welcomed, like several other nations, the Indian government's stand on the matter and the BJP's action taken against the officials.
