Minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju on Monday jumped into a fresh row when he hinted that a Delhi University student who has launched a social media campaign against the ABVP was being influenced by political rivals.
“Who’s polluting this young girl’s mind? A strong Arm Force prevents a war. India never attacked anyone but a weak India was always invaded,” Rijiju tweeted.
The minister was referring to an old picture of Gurmehar Kaur that has resurfaced in social media after the Lady Shri Ram College student took on the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
“Pakistan did not kill my dad, war did,” reads a placard she carries in the picture.
Kaur, whose father captain Mandeep Singh was killed in 1999 Kargil war with Pakistan, said on Sunday she was called anti-national and threatened with rape for her campaign against the ABVP.
The ABVP is the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, the ideological parent of the BJP to which Rijiju belongs. The student body was linked to February 22 violence at Delhi University’s Ramjas College.
After the campus clash, Kaur posted a picture of herself on Twitter and Facebook holding a placard. “I am student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me,” the message read. Soon, the post went viral.
