Already depleted, Sri Lanka were sweating over the extent of damage to their stand-in captain Rangana Herath’s middle finger in his left hand after suffering injury while fielding during the first Test against India on Friday. (Highlights, India vs Sri Lanka, 1st cricket Test, Day 3)

Herath hurt the finger in his bowling hand when he tried to stop a stinging drive from India skipper Virat Kohli at cover. In pain, he left the field immediately for treatment.

“It is the same finger which he had fractured in 2014. The X-ray doesn’t show a fracture, and is being treated with icing. Depending on how it is in the morning we will take a call whether an MRI needs to be done,” informed Sri Lanka team manager Asanka Gurusinha.

Herath is the world’s leading left-arm spinner and is captaining the side in place of the unwell Dinesh Chandimal.
