Shito Ryu Karate-do Seiko Kai India
The institute, run by Sensei Bharat Sharma, mostly has women as students who are also taught self defense techniques using umbrellas, scarves and purses among other things. “With the right technique one can conquer even the strongest challenges,” says Sharma, who is a black belt 6th dan and also the chief coach of NSG black cat commandoes. The classes are carried out on all days of the week.

Kuniba Kai India
Kuniba Kai is a worldwide Japanese martial arts organisation and Shihan Nawal Datta is the Indian representative. His academy teaches kickboxing, karate-do and goshin-do. Goshin-do is an advanced Japanese martial art that teaches one to target certain pressure points while defending one’s self, however, it requires a lot of training to perfect. This academy also takes pride in the fact that a large number of women come to them to learn to defend themselves. Datta is a professor of martial arts and has been practicing for 25 years. He is a 5th dan from World Karate-do Federation and All India Karate-do Federation. Participants from all age groups can join; the classes are mostly conducted over the weekend.

School of Shotokan Karate-Do
The School is run by Sensei Rajeev Sabharwal and teaches mainly Shotokan karate, which is a Japanese martial art form. The curriculum here, involves acrobatics and stretching, to make the body more flexible. Sabharwal believes that karate is not just about learning physical movement but it is also a way of life. He is also trained in the healing arts and through karate, he has helped improve people’s asthmatic conditions and joint problems. The institute also holds special sessions for young women and children, throughout the week.

DSK School of Self Defense
Get enrolled here, to learn traditional karate and kabudo, involving use of wooden sticks. SK Yadav, the chief coach here, believes: “Knowledge of such techniques not only makes you confident but also adds to your fitness,” says Yadav, who is also a yoga instructor, a fitness trainer and has practiced karate and kabudo for over 21 years now.
