The situation worsened following heavy rains in the catchment areas of several rivers, including the Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, Kosi, Adhwara group of rivers and Gandak.

Water level in all these rivers was rising and there was no sign of improvement in the situation in the next 48 hours, Central Water Commission sources said.

The met office has predicted heavy rains in the catchment of these rivers and the upper catchment areas of river Sone.

The Ganges, which was flowing 38 cm and 97 cm above the danger level at Kahalgaon and Sahebganj respectively, is likely to rise further by 18 cms and 11 cms by this evening. The water level of Gandak is also likely to increase by 29 cms and 32 cms at Chakia and Rewaghat respectively.
