Announcing this on Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary Sherub Tenzin said the office was established after the National Assembly enacted the Attorney General Act, 2006 in June.

The office will assist and advise the government on legal affairs, Bhutan's national newspaper Kuensel reported.

Dorji said his basic responsibilities would not be different from that of the office of legal affairs of which he is the director, but would have bigger challenges.

"The office will draft laws, review existing laws, prosecute on behalf of the government, and also represent the government in the International Court of Justice," Dorji said.
