The police, however, believe Amarbai’s son Ramesh actually killed Dughiya, and the former was taking the fall for it.

“We have detained Amarbai but cannot believe that she is the killer because she is old and weak. We are questioning other family members and will be able to comment after the post-mortem report,” said senior inspector P.R. Suryavanshi.

According to neighbours, at about 12.15 pm, Dughiya along with 15 men armed with choppers and sticks entered the Parmar home and threatened Ramesh. Dughiya and Ramesh had an argument which turned violent, they said Dughiya’s friends, meanwhile, fled after Amarbai threw kerosene on them and threatened to light a match if they did not leave. Dughiya then started misbehaving with the women, after which Amarbai stabbed him, said the neighbours.

“I was at home when Dughiya came to our house and called out for Ramesh chacha. All children were sent upstairs but I could hear the arguments. I went to call my elder chacha who had gone out. When I returned I saw Dughiya lying dead in a pool of blood,” said Pravin, Ramesh’s nephew.
