Gujarat Dipda Darwaja riot: Ex-MLA , 61 others acquitted

A special trial court has pronounced it's verdict which held 22 persons guilty in Dipda Darwaja 2002 riots case in which 11 persons a family belonging to minority community were burnt alive by a mob that was led by the then BJP MLA of Visnagar Prahlad Patel. Mahesh Langa reports.

A special trial court has pronounced it's verdict which held 22 persons guilty in Dipda Darwaja 2002 riots case in which 11 persons a family belonging to minority community were burnt alive by a mob that was led by the then BJP MLA of Visnagar Prahlad Patel.

The court acquitted 61 accused in the case. Former MLA Patel has also been acquitted by the court.

Among these killed included two children and a 65 year old woman.

There were 83 persons facing the trial including former MLA Patel and ex police inspector MK Patel, who was the first investigation officer of the case who had allegedly botched up the probe. There are also three women as accused in the case.

This is one of the nine cases the Supreme Court appointed SIT had reinvestigated under the Apex Court direction.

This is the third case of post Godhara riots which has seen convictions. Earlier, Sardarpura and Ode village massacre cases had seen convictions.
