The victim was identified as assistant sub-inspector Sohan Lal. He was manning a post when a mortar shell fired from the Pakistani side hit him. Though the LoC is manned by the Indian Army, BSF men are deployed in some areas.

Sources said Pakistani troops also opened fire in Samba district along the International Border (IB) early in the morning.“Pakistan rangers fired three rounds early (Sunday) morning using small weapons. The fire was aimed at a forward border outpost in Samba,” a BSF official said. He, however, added the BSF did not retaliate.

In recent weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a spike in ceasefire violations that coincided with a downturn in ties between India and Pakistan. Planned talks between the national security advisers of the two countries collapsed last month amid diplomatic acrimony.
