Members of hardline all-women separatist organisation Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM) on Wednesday hoisted Pakistani flags at several places across Srinagar to mark ‘Pakistan Day’.
The flags were hoisted at many places in the city including Lal Chowk, airport road and many places in Srinagar’s old city but were later removed by the police.
DeM, led by Asiya Andrabi, has been hoisting Pakistani flags annually on the occasion of Pakistan Day as well as on Pakistan’s Independence Day (August 14).
Last year, Andrabi was booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for unfurling the Pakistani flag.
DeM also held a function to mark the day. In a video released by the organisation, Andrabi can be heard saying the creation of Pakistan was as per the Holy Quran. Andrabi also said her organisation is committed to the cause of “liberation of Kashmir and will continue her fight for the same’’.
Leaders of both moderate and hardline factions of Hurriyat, including ailing leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, are expected to attend Pakistan Day celebration at the country’s High Commission in Delhi on Wednesday, following an invitation by Pak envoy Abdul Basit.
While greeting the government, army and people of Pakistan on Pakistan Resolution Day, All Parties Hurriyat Conference, led by Geelani, said Pakistan has political importance in the Muslim world and the country is the centre of hope, not only for the sub-continent but also for the entire Muslim “ummah” (community).
