The convicts have been identified as sub-inspector Satbir Singh, havildar Ashok Kumar and constable Ashok.

As per details, a police team headed by sub-inspector Satbir Singh had killed one Jasbir Singh alias Jassu (40), a resident of Dhakla village of Jhajjar district, on October 12, 2008.

Police had said that they had received a tip-off that Sombir, a history sheeter and brother of Jasbir, was seen near Dhakla village and they had gunned him down for not surrendering. Actually, police had killed Jasbir instead of Sombir. The police officials had lodged several criminal cases against Jasbir to evade action against them.

Residents of the village had launched an agitation and demanded inquiry into the fake encounter case.

Finally, a probe was launched by the then SDM Satinder Duhan and based on the report findings, a criminal case was lodged against the trio. On Thursday, based on the SDM's report, the court of additional district and sessions judge Raj Gupta found the cops guilty of the crime. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each and a year's imprisonment in case of non-payment of fine.
