The animal had killed three children in the area since August 10.

The leopard was pronounced a 'man-eater' after it mauled and killed a 10-year-old boy Basit Ahmad Mir in Karihama, Pazipora Chek, Kupwara. Another child, Omar Manzoor, was killed on September 20 at Sheikhpora village of Magam, Handwara.

The most recent victim was 10-year-old Faheem. The boy was taken away by the leopard while playing cricket with his friends.

Wildlife officials said the leopard was killed following complaints of frequent sightings and attacks on people in the area.

"The team was fully equipped with tranquilising guns, cages, nets and with sharp shooters. The man-eater was eliminated in Bomi-Dager (Handwara) after intensive combing and search operations conducted by the wildlife staff," said wildlife warden Rouf Zargar.

Earlier this week, a bear was shot dead by wildlife authorities in the Sopore area of this north Kashmir district, after it attacked and injured a 62-year-old Habibullah in the apple town of Sopore.
Another bear was shot dead on November 3 in Bandipora, north Kashmir.
