U Sagayam, 52, a senior IAS official was punished for taking on the state textiles minister S Gokul Indira and his refusal to accept her requests. He was transferred twice in 48 hours – first as commissioner of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy on Wednesday and two days later on Friday was shifted as vice chairman of Science City.

He was the chief of the Weavers Cooperative Society, Co-optex, and had turned it around in two years time. But he ran foul of the textile minister, and paid for its by a transfer. Trouble for Sagayam began when he took an attack on a manager of Co-optex very seriously and filed police case to bring the attackers to book. Sources said the minister had forced the manager to withdraw his complaint against the attackers, who belonged to AIADMK.

Most recently, the IAS official is said to have refused to allot office space to textiles minister in the building housing the Co-optex as it would adversely affect the functioning of the body. His offer to the minister to use his own office as and when needed was not acceptable to the minister.

Sagayam was the personal choice of the then chief election commissioner and put in charge of conducting election in Madurai district during the 2011 assembly elections. Sagayam took on the powerful the then union minister and DMK patriarch’s elder son MK Alagiri and ensured free and fair elections.

His touch stance had Karunanidhi complain to the election commission of “emergency-like” conditions in Madurai.
