All’s not lost for Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf. True, his popularity ratings are in a free-fall mode, but then he is doing quite well in the free-fall model department. Miss Pakistan World 2007 Mahleej Sarkari, it seems, has gone all mushy over Mush. Don’t go by the last name, she’s no government stooge. In a heartfelt missive on the internet, Ms Sarkari wrote: “Musharraf is a hunk. He has enough charisma to have young girls going nuts.”
And, she is not the only ‘nut’. Sonia Ahmed, founder of the Miss Pakistan World Pageant, is also a huge fan of the 65-year-old ‘hunk’. On the pageant’s website, there are photographs of beauty queens holding up the President’s picture, blowing kisses and saying, “We love you Mushy.” Ms Sarkari, however, does not believe in silly poster-worship; she wants to go out on date with the ‘charming’ President. The reason for such unstinted support: “In President Musharraf’s tenure, women of Pakistan have been given a lot of rights. His contribution towards building a better image of Pakistan throughout the world has turned me into a huge fan of his. I truly admire, respect and love him for all he is worth,” she said.
Even the most-staunch Musharraf fan will have difficulty in agreeing to that ‘image-building’ comment. Last heard, even old ally US President George W. Bush is having second thoughts. But, then you know, as they say, love is blind.
