While Maoists in Nepal are fighting to end “feudal monarchy”, a Nepali film Basain, which portray torture of poor farmers by feudal landlord, has been selected for the Oscar Award 2006.
The film has been selected from Nepal under the foreign language film category in the forthcoming 79th Academy Awards, and the film fraternity is optimistic that Basain, which means migration, will win the first Oscar Award for the country.
“This is a really an off-beat film, and the western audience would like it,” Yadav Kharel, the founder chairman of Film Development Board of Nepal, said, adding that the film is based on a popular novel by Lil Bahadur Chhetri, a famous Nepali writer from Assam.
It deals with a tragic story of how a heavily indebted villager is forced to leave his village. Directed by Subash Gajurel, the film earned huge applauds in Nepal as well.
“The best story and best film of Nepal has been selected for the Oscars,” Ashok Sharma, chairman of Nepal Film Producers’ Association, said, claiming that Basain had great chance to win the Academy Award.
While most commercial Nepali films are cheap Bollywood copycats, Baisin is defined as a unique film by the industry people.
