The election commission has asked the administration to arrest all active, absconding criminals by January 31 so that poll violence can be averted. The police would have to furnish, to the district election officer, the locations of those whose cases are in courts.
There are 2,180 criminals in Noida and Greater Noida. Of them, the number of history-sheeters, habitual offenders or those who have a long criminal record and have been arrested several times, in both cities is 816. Of them, cases of only 86 are lodged with Noida police stations, while the rest (730) have been booked in Greater Noida.
Senior superintendent of police (rural area) Rakesh Jolly told HT on Friday, “All history-sheeters are not a threat. We're identifying those who are still criminally active. Action will be taken against them. A number of those who could have disturbed the poll process, have already been apprehended.”
The commission has asked the administration to compile a list of those found involved in booth capturing, intimidation and cases of other poll violence in previous elections. The police would also update the lists of history-sheeters, declared absconders, fugitive criminals in each police station. The police would execute pending warrants and expedite investigation and prosecution in all electoral offences registered earlier.
