The CPI(M) central committee on Saturday reiterated that the party would not allow the Indo-US nuclear deal to be operationalised, irrespective of the outcome of Delhi’s negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
At the end of the party’s three-day central committee meeting, politburo member MK Pandhe said: “The party’s stand on the nuclear deal is very clear, that in no case will we allow it to be operationalised. That stand has not changed. Whatever the outcome of negotiations at the IAEA, we will not allow the Indo-US nuclear deal to be operationalised.”
Pandhe’s politburo colleague Sitaram Yechury said the result of the negotiations with the IAEA would be placed before the UPA-Left political committee. There was a lot in the deal that was not in favour of India, he said.
“Since the CPM is at the forefront of opposition to a strategic alliance with the US and firmly against neo-liberal policies, which harm the interests of the working people, vested interests are targeting the party,” the CPM said in a release, listing issues that were discussed at the central committee meeting.

“An illustration of this smear campaign is the spate of media reports attributed to the CBI about the incidents of March 14. What is being cited is not the CBI’s conclusion after investigations but the complaints lodged and the deposition of persons in this connection.
The CBI has yet to submit its report to the high court for which it has asked for two months’ time,” the party said.
The other matters discussed were repairing ties with Iran, price rise, the food policy and public distribution system and the need for a sub-plan for minorities.
