Premchand?s works more relevant now

He was expressing his views at the concluding session of a two-day seminar on Premchand and his relevance in the present scenario. Prof Ahmad said as along as the society was divided in classes and the downtrodden struggled, Premchand’s works would remain relevant.

He stressed the need for research on Premchand’s life and work.
In the last session, Dr Sagir Alam presented a paper on Premchand’s ‘Karbala’ and said the characters in it were attractive. At the same time, he said since Premchand was basically a writer of stories, he failed to tune himself to demands of play writing. Dr Tabassum Bano presented a paper on ‘The Problems of Women in Novels of Premchand’ and said he dealt with subjects like mismatched marriage, widows’ plight in his novels and suggested social reforms.

Dr Darasksha Tajwar highlighted the contribution of Premchand’s writing in the freedom movement and claimed he had kindled the national spirit among the youth. She said Premchand was not satisfied with Mahatma Gandhi’s doctrine of non-violence.

Head of the department of Urdu Prof Afghanullah Khan thanked the delegates for their participation. He said the seminar had provided delegates with the opportunity to exchange their views.
