After counting of votes for 14 development blocks, nine candidates of Samajwadi Party were declared elected while the Bahujan Samaj Party bagged three seats. Two independent candidates were also declared elected. As many as 1,288 voters exercised their franchise in the election.

It may be noted that the election of Sadar development block had been postponed by the Election Commission earlier while the counting of votes for Reotipur development block was not held following the killing of four persons in poll-related violence today.

Meanwhile, the election of Block Pramukh for eight development blocks in Varanasi district passed off peacefully today without any untoward incident.

There were 19 candidates in the fray . The SP and the BJP bagged three seats each while two were won by independents. Jailed Tribhuwan Singh, arrested by police on Monday on the charge of kidnapping a voter, was elected from Cholapur development block and daughter-in-law of influential BJP MLC Chulbul Singh also won the election from Sewapuri development block.

A Gorakhpur report adds: The Samajwadi Party and the candidates it supported faced a humiliating defeat in the block pramukh elections held under tight security in 15 blocks of the district on Wednesday and independents bagged most of the seats, stunning the heavyweights of the ruling party with the results declared in the evening.

In Barhalganj block, independent candidate Prem Kanti Devi defeated SP candidate Sunita Tiwari who was also supported by cabinet minister Harishanker Tiwari. The defeat of the SP candidate in the bastion of the cabinet minister has raised the hackles of the party leaders.
