A Sri Lankan Air Force Kfir supersonic fighter-bomber crashed into the Negombo lagoon, north of the capital city of Colombo at 5.45 pm on Monday, the Defence Ministry spokesman said.

The pilot ejected from the ill-fated aircraft and was safe. He was on a training flight, the spokesman added.

Negombo is next to the SLAF’s main base at Katunayake.

The SLAF’s squadron of Israeli–built Kfirs have played a stellar role in the recent military operations against the LTTE in the North and East, going on bombing and ground troops support missions on a daily basis.
