An active member of the DMK, who won from Tiruchengode Lok Sabha constituency, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan has contested a number of elections both for the state legislature and Parliament since 1977. 56-year-old Jagadeesan, a Bsc BT, first won in the 1977 assembly polls while she was in AIADMK led by late M G Ramachandran and was Handloom minister in his cabinet.

In 1980, she joined DMK and in 1989 was social welfare minister in the Karunanidhi ministry. Between 2000 and 2002, she was deputy general secretary of DMK. She was arrested under TADA and jailed for nine months. In 1992, she contested Lok Sabha polls for the first time.
