Senior leader Nayini Narasimha Reddy hoisted the party flag and offered floral tributes to “Telangana Talli” (mother Telangana) on the occasion in Hyderabad.

“Year 2009 will be decisive and Telangana will become a reality this year,” Reddy said amidst cheers from party workers who gathered at TRS headquarters Telangana Bhavan.

TRS chief Chandrasekhar Rao, however, chose to stay away from the function.

It was on April 27, 2001 that Rao quit the Telugu Desam Party to float the TRS with the objective of securing statehood for Telangana.

By 2004, the TRS emerged as a decisive force in the Telangana region. The Congress, which was in the Opposition at that time, joined hands with the TRS to dislodge the TDP, which was ruling for almost ten years, from power.

Though it promised to carve out Telangana state on winning the 2004 elections, the Congress failed to keep its promise, prompting the TRS to sever its ties with the party.
